The latest update to the Classic Cars magazine Price Guide Quarterly sees the Opel Manta GT/E accelerate hard towards catching up its old Eighties sparring partner, the Ford Capri 2.8 Injection.

A spectacular surge puts the opel to the top of our Price Guide Movers On The Up table with a 59% gain. That makes rough, project cars making around £1.85k, with usable examples around £3.75k and the really sharp cars anywhere from £8k-12.5k. The fast rearwheel drive Ford has always had a stronger following in its domestic market so the growth in prices was inevitable, especially when you discover that of the 8500 examples that were still licensed in 1995, only 532 remain.

Compare that with the Opel, which boasted slightly more of licensed survivors in 1995 of which just 59 survive according to DVLA figures. So if you fancy one now, it’s a seller’s market. The 55,579-mile GT/E coupé that ACA just sold for nearly £16k is a good examples of how far it’s come
