Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar

This spectacular Porsche 959 was one of three entered into the 1985 Paris-Dakar Rally in the hope of repeating the success of the previous year when Rene Metge and Dominique Lemoyne won in a four-wheel drive version of the 911 Carrera 3.2, Jackie Ickx and Claude Brasseur finishing 6th with the third car down in 26th.

Unfortunately all three of the new cars failed to finish the 1985 event, including car, number 186, driven by Metge and Lemoyne. The winning 911 from 1984 and 959 from 1986 are both owned my Porsche – I had a lot of fun testing them in the Australian desert a few years back – but this car is in private hands and is coming up for sale with RM Sotheby's in its October Atlanta auction. It's one of just six built of which five survive. If I had the $3-3.4m estimate spare I think I'd have a bid, just for old times' sake.
