1972 Ford Escort MkI – 'dry' engine build

As you can see, the ‘new’ 1660cc block is back from its hot caustic soda bath, and has been built up – sort of. There's only one piston in it, but at this stage it's just a 'dry' build to check that everything fits and the valves don't hit the pistons.

The bath didn’t manage to shift all the silt inside, my engine builder spent hours with a torch and screwdriver poking into the waterways to get the rest out. What was it used as before? An anchor?

It looks a million times better now, even in its part-built state, and I can't wait for it to get to the next stage – running.

I've just one complaint. You see the Titan roller rocker kit on top of the cylinderhead? You won't be able to when it's running. That's such a shame, it's a CNC-machined masterpiece. Anyone make a see-through rocker cover?
